Short description

Strengthen a social enterprise on sustainable fish farming. 2-4 weeks, Q1 2010.

About CERD

CERD (Center for empowerment & resource for development inc.) is an NGO with 28 employees, established in 1983. They work with fishing communities in coastal areas in the Philippines. They envision empowered, self-reliant coastal communities sustainably living in harmony with a diverse coastal and marine environment. CERD aims to achieve this goal by contributing in saving and restoring the coastal environment through capacity building of local institutions. For instance with a creation of model communities, learning areas and new partnerships built. Fish farmers are eager to learn other, more sustainable ways of fishing, provided it improves their livelihood.

2 years ago CERD set up a social enterprise, next to the NGO. The CERD Social Enterprise Program (CERD SE) contributes to the growth of the prawn industry through promotion of quality prawn fry & grow-out prawns. They target environment-friendly extensive farming technology practiced by Farm Operators. A prawn hatchery is the basis of the Social Enterprise.
The CERD SE vision: A sustainable social enterprise entity that is instrumental to the coastal community poverty reduction. It supports CERD's sustainability in its community based coastal resource management programs.

CERD SE wants to be recognized as major supplier of quality finfish and shellfish in Northern Mindanao. This will effect in improved productivity and income of small prawn growers. It builds capacity and transforms municipal fishers in responsible farmers and social entrepreneurs, upholding the highest standard of responsible aquaculture.

The social impact of CERD SE is:

  • local employment and/or income generation
  • community involvement
  • improving quality of life
  • transfer of knowledge and skills
  • positive environmental impact

What will you work on during your stay in the Philippines

CERD wants the SE Program to become a registered enterprise. Targeting export possibilities, the challenge faced is how to ensure the operation of the social enterprise is based on applicable international standards and target results. For 2 years, CERD was in the stage of incubation based on the Business Plan. But then the projections in the Business Plan were not met due to different internal and external factors. Marketing has been identified by the Staff assigned as a key factor since last year. The goal is to allow international trading regarding shrimps, seeweeds and/or sea cucumber. The assistance of a fish/shrimp processing expert allows them to process produce that cannot be sold as fresh, and probably help CERD become a niche-exporter to the E.U.

CERD SE is in it's second year and the need to systematize operations is a must. CERD SE would like to develop an operational roadmap on how to strengthen the social enterprise. This touches:

  • marketing strengthening
  • value added processing/technology
  • operational effectiveness and efficiency

What does CERD expect from you

You need to be an expert on marketing & sales within aquaculture. Experience in value added processing and technologies are a necessity, preferably marine products such as milkfish, prawn, abalone, seaweeds or sea cucumber. Furthermore, you need to be able to adapt to the Filipino way of life in this specific region (Cagayan d'Oro), be flexible and creative.

Also, to participate in an Expert Programme you need to have:

  • at least five years of relevant working experience
  • at least finished an HBO-education or have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree

Costs

For participating in this programme you will not receive a salary. However, the local organisation arranges and pays for your accommodation and meals. International travelling expenses are to be paid by the participant. Additionally, SharePeople charges you a fee. The height of this fee may vary, depending on the level of preparation and coaching desired or necessary.
