A jump into the deep end!

Have you been walking around for quite some time with the thought of using your expertise to work on a specific business case? And are you looking for a unique international challenge and experience?

About the organisation

Labo Progressive Multi-Purpose Cooperative (LPMPC, since 1990) aims to provide better services to their members through establishing market (local and international). To provide better income for members by providing decent jobs to the large number of unemployed in the province.

Originally, LPMPC was set up as a micro-finance cooperative and extended its services with savings and consumers stores for their growing members. Nowadays, since the cooperative is continuously growing, they are also into marketing of their members' products like piña cloth and other products.

Engaging in different agri-business project, members rose to more than 2,500, increasing paid-up capital to PhP 7 million and savings rose to PhP 7 million with present assets of more than PhP 28 million. Operations extended from municipality to province wide. Different local and national government agencies ride on their projects donating buildings, equipments and machines and even financial assistance. The cooperative became partner and conduits of governments in implementing grassroots projects, generating employment and provides additional income to small farmers.

The social impact of the organisation is to develop lives of indigenous people through capacity building. LPMPC reduces unemployment and provides an alternative source of income to small farmers. As of 30 June 2009, there are 2,879 members. The current goal is to strengthen their national market position and to develop more financial products for potential clients.

What will you work on

Even with extra manpower they could not catch up with the big microfinance players. People assigned in the financial projects are short of capability to manage the project. Most importantly, their products need a refreshment to compete with benefits and services of other establishments as revenues are lowering. LPMPC is planning to overhaul their system to make the turn around but they need the help of an expert that could help them formulate this strategy.

They need your assistance to assess their current financial products, and determine if they match the market need. You are asked to co-create a plan to position LPMPC stronger in the current cooperative microfinance market by developing new products.
